I enjoyed reading this picture book In a very simple manner this book presents ten African American figures in American history and showed how they were all interconnected It easily shows how the accomplishments of each opened a door for the next to succeed Each person known in different fields relied on the people of the past to lay the groundwork for the future The picture book format is easy to understand and is then followed by a paragraph biography stating their contribution to African American heritage and the civil rights movementThis book also features 12 different African American illustrators The use of different illustrators as a collaborative effort also demonstrates a uniue connection A brief biography of each and their connection to the person they illustrated is also included This book is very appropriate for readers in kindergarten through middle school This book can be used to discuss the lives of those included but the format and style can easily be imitated Students could easily create their own book that shows their family progression through generations historical figures of the American Revolution or people from any culture or religion

Although there is very little text in this book with some foreshadowing done by the teacher prior to reading the book leads students through the accomplishments of African Americans from the birth of the country to today Each page links one accomplishment with the next I could see this as being a great starting point for a unit on the Civil Rights Movement Because the text is so sparse a teacher could add as much detail as they feel their students are ready for I very easy book to differentiate with

I loved this book The book is written as a poem and gives a brief introduction to different influential African Americans At the back of the book there is detail on each person in case students want to learn about them The illustrations on each page is done by a different illustrator and teaches the theme of teamwork All the illustrators had to work together for one goal which is bring the text to life just like how all the people mentioned worked towards one goal so that children today can soar There is also additional information on the illustrators at the back of the book In the classroom this book can be used to teach students about teamwork History is made up of many people working together for a cause Teachers can have students pick a person from the book and look up additional information about their character Teachers can challenge students to took at the characteristics that each person possessed and discuss why their virtue outweigh their vice
