When you live here year round on Corfu it s easy to overlook the island s captivating beauty as well as the interesting and notable people who once resided here A day in front of the computer overshadows the millions of olive trees with glinting silver leaves A dreaded trip to the dentist in Corfu Town eclipes the flowers exploding like fireworks in all shapes and colours Everyday routines triumph the sea as smooth as a dish of honey dotted with boats swimmers and perhaps underwater secrets A white house built on the shore overlooking Kalami Bay becomes just another house not the former residence of poet novelist traveller and iconoclast Lawrence DurrellSongs of Blue and Gold by Deborah Lawrenson brought the best of Corfu back me This is the story about two women Melissa an unhappily married archivist and her mother Elizabeth who on her death bed presents her daughter with a startling and mysterious key to her past a copy of Collected Poems by Julian Adie Lawrenson s fictional version of Lawrence Durrell On the title page an inscription by the author reads To Elizabeth always remembering Corfu what could have been and what we must both forget So begins Melissa s journey from England to Corfu to the South of France in search of her mother s past relationship with Adie as well as an internal exploration of her own unhappy personal life Structurally complex the novel moves from Melissa s investigations to passages of Elizabeth s time spent on Corfu with Julian Adie to fictional biography book excerpts detailing Adie s many lives and loves A timeless character who seduces all those around him both in life and after death Adie acts as a bridge between Elizabeth s past and Melissa s present His biography makes Melissa uestion the biographies of others including her mother Elizabeth s and the revelation that past events shape as well as influence the lives of those in the present tenseLawrenson s description of Corfu and particuraly of Kalami both past and present is thoughtful delicate and beautiful Her words paint the island at its best Take this passage which I can easily read over and over again Each time she walked the tiny main road effectively barely than a lane she noticed the powerful scent of jasmine escaping over a wall bright globes in orange and lemon trees the violent trumpets of morning glory winding through wire fencing and everywhere the ancient gnarled olive tree each composites of several intertwining trunks some so holed and intricately braided you could see right through them Ah Corfu Eually impressive Lawrenson delves deep into the tricky and highly subjective world of time and memory and the gaps which break as well as the bridges that bind the two together In this way Songs of Blue and Gold can be classified as a work of literary fiction Then again the portryal of Melissa s investigations into her mother s past while searching for answers in her own personal life often reads as a cat and mouse game a mystery which needs solving in the most literal sense through clues found in conventional scenes and conversations A commerically viable techniue perhaps however I couldn t help but feel let down by the scores of standard plot moving dialogs On whole however I appreciated the major issues and themes this book explores I have the feeling that if the real Julian Adie Lawrence Durrell read Songs of Blue and Gold he would smile

Summary Songs of Blue and Gold

Songs of Blue and Gold Download Ñ 104 characters ´ PDF, DOC, TXT or eBook ¸ Deborah Lawrenson Summary Songs of Blue and Gold Sometimes the key to the future lies in the past In the horseshoe bay of Kalami in Corfu a tumultuous love affair begins between a renowned novelist and a woman escaping scandal Years later her daughter Melissa running from her own past returns to the island Melissa's life in England is in disarray There are cracks in her perfect marri. I d fallen asleep for an hour late afternoon to the weary hum of ageing insects and woke with the drumming thought time present is long a breath a heartbeat and then it s goneI read this book amidst the buzzing hum of cicadas with views of the intensely blue Ionian Sea in front of me and surrounded by an almost shimmering wall of midsummer heat One of Lawrenson s great strengths as a writer is her ability to convey the natural landscape in precise and sensuous detail and there was great pleasure in reading her descriptions of Corfu as I lounged in my Kefalonian villa If you like me enjoy matching your book to location I highly recommend this to you as a summer read Even if you aren t already in Greece if you can abandon yourself to the book s charms you may be able to imaginatively transport yourself there I became acuainted with the author through Instagram and our first conversations there were about our mutual interest in Lawrence Durrell specifically his books known as the Alexandria uartet In this novel Lawrenson has created a Durrell inspired character called Julian Adie and invested him with many of Durrell s characteristics and personal history She has also captured the Durrell voice so accurately that I asked her if some lines were lifted directly from Durrell s writing The other was no or rather I do hope not The locations which were so important to Durrell s life and writing specifically Corfu and Sommieres France are also key to the storyline of this book The protagonist is Melissa a London based archivist in her late 30s At the beginning of the novel Melissa is facing the loss of the two pillars of her life her husband and her mother Elizabeth As her mother begins to fade away from a fast progressing form of Alzheimer s disease Melissa must also confront the betrayal of her husband She is truly a character at a crossroads in her life In her last months Melissa s mother leaves a few tantalising but elusive clues to a past that has been kept hidden from her daughter her only child One of the clues is a name Julian The other is a copy of Julian Adie s Collected Poems inscribed with the following To Elizabeth always remembering Corfu what could have been and what we must both forget In an attempt to both escape the pain of the present and perhaps also find some guidance or suppressed truth from the past Melissa journeys to Corfu to see what she can discover about her mother s past life and connection to Julian AdieMelissa s journey in this book is a circuitous one and she will also revisit both her childhood homes in Kent and the Languedoc region of France before finding some resolution in Corfu If I had a frustration with the book it was with the central character who is at times so lost and withdrawn so afraid of acting that I became annoyed with her There are tantalising prospects for Melissa particularly in the form of a possible romance but for most of the novel she is too stuck to pursue them The past is generally alive than the present in this story and the most vivid parts of the book involve a young Elizabeth and her middle aged lover Julian Adie Like Durrell Adie is a man of many parts charismatic and vital and curious but also selfish and cruel There is a dramatic death in the past that becomes a hinge for the plot and Melissa believes that it is a key to understanding something but it is a diversion both for the storyline and the character than anything else The mood of the novel is strong and it finishes on a high note Even though I am still in Greece I left the world of the novel with regret and plenty of curiousity to read about the man who inspired it
