Alanna Mitchell is a journalist who worked for Canada s The Globe and Mail as the earth sciencesenvironment reporter and earned the paper international awards for environmental reporting Mitchell is also the daughter of a biologist and someone whose passion for blending writing and environmental awareness led to a journey to the planet s many ecological hot spots For those who have read environmental odysseys this is a solid one but does not provide the depth or connectedness that can be found in others eg Safina s or Whitty s books previously reviewed However she does capture the intensity of change the local realities and complexities involved in environmental issues and of course there is the joy of travelling around the planet with someone who has genuinely been there For me the strongest chapters were the introductory one where she discusses Darwin and brings him alive and the the chapter on Suriname a country whose commitment to environmental protection has made it a leading light for many thanks largely to Conservation International and a handful of scientists working with local people to derive a new model of local conservation Personally I think this is a book for those who have not read much about the environment or for early high school students who want a flavour of environmental issues and what can be done about them Just a final note It was published in 2005 so the status of the ecological hot spots has changed further and for that reason this is not a book to read if you want current information
